What if Thatcher had nuked Argentina during the Falklands War?
Giles Cattermole
Giles Cattermole, studied at INSEAD
Updated Sun
I was glued to the radio [BBC] on 2nd April 1982.
At the 12:00 am midday News, it was clear that the invasion had taken place. Everybody was rushing around, looking for more news and comment.
At the 3:00 pm News, there was an interview with someone from RUSI [Royal United Services Institute]. RUSI is an institution for very senior retired naval, military and airforce officers. Independent of the government-of-the-day, but generally closely aligned with its views.
The interviewee was asked “What can we do?”. He pointed out one of our nuclear missile submarines was well within range of Buenos Aires. And the Polaris missile warheads had a rather nifty “Selectadeath” dial, which could turn the yield down from almost a megaton to below 30 kilotons. At the range of the submarine, the Circular Error Probability would be less than 100 metres. So a single warhead, turned right down, and set to go off after impact [i.e. below ground] would take out the Casa Rosada and the immediately surrounding government offices, but with little wider collateral damage.
I thought “That’s a rather robust response, for 2,000 British sheep farmers!” And I was sure it would provoke vigorous reactions - both for and against. So I listened very attentively to the next News at 6:00 pm.
Nothing. No repetition. No reactions. I was really puzzled . . . . .
Until I realised that, though there were millions of people who MIGHT have been listening to that 3:00 pm broadcast, there was one group that absolutely WAS listening: the Junta of Galtieri, Anaya and Lami Dozo.
This was a “credibly deniable” warning to the Junta that the UK was serious about it, and they should be prepared to lose – and lose big . . . . |
